This press statement is issued by MESSRS ZAIN MEGAT & MURAD, Solicitors for Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Azam Bin Baki, the Chief Commissioner of the MACC.
Today we have filed a claim for defamation in the Kuala Lumpur High Court, on behalf of Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Azam Bin Baki (our Client), against Ms. Lalitha Kunaratnam (the Defendant). The suit relates to the articles published and republished by the Defendant in the Independent News Service (INS) on 26.10.2021 and 15.12.2021.
Instead of responding to our client’s Letter of Demand issued on 6.1.2022, she has through her lawyer issued a press statement published on her Twitter account, wherein she has claimed to stand by her publication and republication, the contents of which our client strenuously maintains are defamatory.
Our Client is therefore constrained to file this suit before the expiry of 14 days from the date of the Letter of Demand to protect his good name, reputation and professional standing. In doing so, our Client is merely asserting his rights as enshrined by the Federal Constitution and applicable laws, to seek the necessary and appropriate reliefs from the Malaysian Courts. Our client strongly believes that this will also provide the Defendant a similar right and an opportunity to justify her claims in court and not merely engage in a trial by the media.
As advised by us, our Client will not be making any further statements in relation to this matter and he has full confidence in the Malaysian courts to hear and decide on this matter accordingly.
Lastly, our Client wishes to make clear his unwavering commitment that the MACC will always protect all whistleblowers who fall within the ambit of the Whistleblower Protection Act, 2010.

I am watching the Azam Baki drama unfolding in real time. What strikes me most is the confident arrogance of this Government servant, who, by any criteria you would care to measure him…whether as a civil servant, as a human being, or as a Muslim, has done wrong.
MACC investigates and prosecutes corruption in the public and private sectors. As its head, Azam Baki has commit grand corruption. He used his public office for private gain. Finding him guilty is just a technicality lah! They shoot people for much less in China.
And what does he tells us? He says he will not resign. He says only the King can decide his fate. Really Azam? How presumptous is that! Not the KSN, not the Minister, not even the PM…but the KING! Woo ha. Azam what have you got on Dollah that makes you so confident that Dollah will want to keep you on as the head honcho of SPRM?
As a civil servant, did you not pledged to be responsible and disciplined. Are you not bound by ethics and morality? Why is all this happening? Where are the checks and balances to keep Public Servants and Public Official on the path of the straight and narrow.
I remember watching FLOM all decked out in jewellery, a USD $100K plus Hermes bag, sunglasses, dressed in an outfit that would be worth more than a Kings ransom, and, at that point in time, thinking that she is indeed FLOM. Where is she today? In the dock on corruption charges.
I remember the arrogance of Najib challenging the opposition to “bring it on” and rudely telling Mahathir “Kepala bapa engkau”. Najib is now a convicted felon.
Looking at FLOM and Najib then, I was not just angry, I was beyond anger. I wanted Najib and Rosmah to be taught a lesson in humility. I wanted them punished if they did wrong.
I want the same for Azam Baki. I want SPRM cleaned up top to bottom. And when we the rakyat tell Azam Baki to jump…I want him to ask us “How high Tuan!”.
SPRM is not our master. SPRM should never think that they can bully any one - not even suspects or the guilty ones. Let the courts do that. Our country have need for order and structure to be imposed upon authorities like SPRM. And any information and evidence they gather in their investigation is to be used in court - not to blackmail others for their personal financial gain. This is what is happening in SPRM now. Berlumba lumba nak buat duit.
I think Lalitha Kunaratnam will be the death of him. Lailitha is waiting to be sued so that she can tell the court what she has and what she knows of Azam Baki and SPRM. And Azam Baki has obliged!
