Let me share an incident I had with my friend at a restaurant.
Our conversation was about some of our political leaders. He was very supportive and appreciative of their behavior, while I was totally the opposite. He mocked me by asking why I was so negative and critical towards them, who had done so much to help the poor and people of all races. To him, they helped many in multiple ways. They distributed BR1M, gave COVID and flood assistance, canceled debt, paid tuition fees and rent gave food aid, etc..
I told him since you think that way, I will bow down to you if you remain calm and stay frozen for the next half an hour.
Although puzzled, he agreed.
I asked him, "Please place your wallet on the table."
He hesitated at first, but then he agreed. I took his wallet.
There was RM240 plus in it. I took all the money and went to pay our bill. I didn’t stop there, I also went and paid for the bills of three other tables of unfamiliar families. Their collective bill amounted to RM217. I didn’t know them, but I went to their tables and told them that today, their meal was my treat; that I had paid for their meals.
You should have seen the joy and appreciation on their faces. A lady stood up and hugged me. Many shook my hand and gave me thank you, thumb up gestures to express their appreciation. I received all sorts of compliments.
My friend was shocked. I could see confusion and anger on his face. He just couldn’t believe what I had just done with his money. He broke the challenge and confronted me for my actions. He just couldn’t accept me using his money to pay for the meals of strangers, and receive all their compliments!
I asked him, "Why are you feeling so angry now? Isn't this what all the political scumbags out there are doing with our money? And billions too, not merely two hundred plus!"
"Why scold me for being a nice guy doing what all our politicians are doing? You are upset at me yet you praise these politician criminals who did the same! They stole public funds; enriched themselves and hid all their wealth overseas in Switzerland, Singapore, London, New York, Dubai, etc. Then they used our money, and our taxes, and donated to the poor to gain political favor and support. You get angry towards me for doing the same, yet you sing praises to these plundering politicians? These politicians stole our rice bowls and our children's futures. They enriched themselves and their families but made us poor to make themselves politically popular. They distributed crumbs to the poor from the stolen billions, which was originally intended for the development of all the people and the country. Why then do we regard these plundering politicians as heroes and champions who did good for the rakyat? We condemn petty crime and jail petty criminals. And yet, we excuse white-collar crime and plunder by politicians. Isn't this just wrong?"
I returned my friend his money, but he remained upset.
I guess some lessons are painful ones, but our children's futures will eventually be even more painful and bitter just because we idolize rich white-collar criminals and powerful plundering politicians.
Let us think carefully about wolves in sheep's clothing before we cast our votes. -
