I am always amused, if not amazed at the judicious use of titles in Bolehland. How condescending is it to have to hear a spouse referring to her husband thus “ Datuk tengah tidor. Can you call back later”. Or a son referring to his dad “Datuk kata dia nak balek kampong next week”. I cringe and move away from these kind of riff raffs who are really nothing without their Datuks. Sad to say that in Malaysia today, these kind of riff raffs are as common as flies buzzing around carrions!
I find it hard, almost impossible, to address a new acquaintance by their titles (bought or deservedly awarded for services to the nation or state) unless I know with certainty that they are deserving of the state or federal awards. So far none have pulled me up and told me “I am a Datuk. Please address me as such”. At 75, you get away with a lot of things, that being one of them.
And when, inevitably by hook or by crook I am made aware by others, that the person I have been talking to for some time is a Datuk, my esteem for them in NOT telling me that they are one, can be seen in the manner that I now address them. Still by their first name, without the honorific titles, but with more gravity and humility (on my part) as my way of showing them respect.
So Najib, that convicted felon, is a Datuk Seri? Azeez of Tabung Haji notoriety is a Datuk Seri Panglima? And Azam Baki is a Tan Sri? Ptui to all of them! You will never see me put any of those undeserved titles in front of their names if I ever I find the need to write about them.
