For many decades, Umno has survived, and survived well, on the premise that they were the champions of Malay rights and Islam. When Dato Onn Jaafar dared to challenge that premise, he was bundled out of Umno. Since then, no other Malay had thought it prudent to suggest that Umno should be anything more than what it has always been : a political party for the Malays, of the Malays and by the Malays dulu, kini dan selama lama nya.
By this claim, UMNO secured the dominant Malay votes and from there, by various ingenious and obnoxious ways, secured for themselves political power and government for decades. The only uncertainty was how many seats would be won by the non-Malay DAP and the Malay-based PAS on election days- and whatever seat won by PAS and DAP never did hamper Umno's looting and plundering of our nation's wealth to benefit and profit Umno operatives.
Ketuanan Melayu and the Bumiputra agenda, with all its attendant abuses and misuse at the expense of the non-Malays, and, it must be said, at the expense of the Malays themselves, were the weapon of choice Umno used to advance their personal and Umno's vulture political agenda.
In the process, all things Malaysia and Malaysian became unwitting accomplices in the rise and rise of corruption and the "cash is king" political genre that has dominated and decimated the economy of this nation and everything else that we hold dear in our hearts: our way of life, our values and our economy. Wielding their war cry that the Malays and Islam are in danger of being engulfed by the non-Malays and by the non-Muslims, Umno went on with the plundering and looting of our nation unabated for deacdes.
In the 60 years of Umno's political dominance, Umno grew increasingly complacent, lethargic and bloated. No other political party challenged Umno political dominance at the polls and without any danger, Umno began an orgy of gouging for themselves the political spoils available to any political party that dominates. Corruption, money politics and greed became Umno's culture and a way of life for Umno politicians.
Without the non-Malays as the perceived threat, the Malays in Umno began to fight among themselves. The Malays became their own worse enemies. Mahathir against Musa and Razallegh. Anwar against Ghafar Baba. Mahathir against Anwar. Mahathir against Abdullah Badawi. Mahathir against Najib. Najib against Muhyiddin. The Malays in Umno started to fight each other for positions, money, the Malays, Islam and of course the Nation. They began to fight each other over anything and everything.
The Malays were fed of this...and it showed in 2015 when the Malay votes became fractured and were given to other Malay political entities and even to DAP and anywhere else the Malays think deserves to have their votes and the Umno led Barisan Nasionl lost political power to Pakatan Harapan.
Today, Umm by default had abdicated its responsibility as the champion for the Malays and for Islam. In its place, there is now PAS and a host of other Malay/Islamaic-centric political entities that have taken it upon themselves to try and do what Umno used to do - to be champions for Malay rights and for Islam.
And in PRU15, PAS emerged unchallenged as the champion of Malay rights and of Islam.
The Malays have given their votes to PAS because Umno has failed them. PKR was not seen as being a champion for Malay rights and for Islam. Pejuang was also seen to be unable to fulfil that need. And so PAS is now the dominant Malay political party - taking over from Umno.
Without the protection of Umno, the Royals will have their position as Rulers challenged if they continue their conspicuously ostentatious lifestyle frowned upon by PAS. Sooner rather than later, they will most likely be forced to give up their long-held position as heads of Islam in their respective state to PAS. Maybe that has already happened in fact, or maybe that is already in the process of happening as the Royals scrambled to defend their position by endorsing the PH Unity government led by DSAI.
This is the new normal of politics today in Malaysia.
If Anwar is to lead us from the Malaysia of race and religion to the Malaysia where each one of us can rightly claim this beloved nation as our own - without the toxic bane of race and religion - then we must pray that there is enough righteousness, enough sense of fair play, enough grace and enough courage within DSAI to take us all to the finishing line....and if truth is to be told...it does not look too good for Anwar. And if it does look too good for Anwar, it stands to reason that it also does not look too good for us too.
There have been times in the past when Anwar's lapse of judgement, happening in the glare of public scrutiny, has not served him well...and he is now again being judged.
The fact is that in PRU15 DSAI has already been judged by the Malays, and he has been found to be wanting, and that judgement can be clearly seen by the massive green tidal wave that has given PN enough seats to have some claim to do government.
Already, circumstance has made it necessary for Anwar to do the things that he said he will not do if the electorates were to give him their votes to form a government.
We understand why he needs to have BN on board, and we understand the appointment of Zahid Hamidi as DPM. But Zafrul? He has not justified his decision to bring Zafrul and a few others into the cabinet - and even if it is his prerogative to appoint who he wants to his cabinet, he needs to justify that decision to the people who have put him into government.
The rest of those who have not voted for PN are watching Anwar closely - watching what he will do as prime minister. Will he fulfil the promises he had made to us...and if we think he has not, what shall we do? Will the Malays who have voted for Anwar now look towards PN as their preferred government? And if they did, what will happen to Anwar - what will happen to this PH-led Unity government?
Already, many Malays, have given their votes to PN in Padang Serai to tell Anwar that they are casting their protest vote against him being their Prime Minister. Anwar must now tread carefully and make certain that there will be no more lapse in judgement as he and his Unity Government make themselves ready to meet the challenge of the ominous green tidal wave of PAS that threatens to sweep everything in their path to kingdom come. The barbarians are already at our gates...hesitate, and they will overrun this fledging DSAI-led PH Unity Government in the blink of an eye. Enough said!
