That was the situation at 4.14 am Sunday morning....and counting.
Mahathir lost in Langkawi. Tun is one of the causalities of PH failure to hold onto power.
The Malays do not want Anwar because he is locked in a coalition with DAP (read the Chinese) and yet the Malays (read UMNO, PN, PAS and Pejuang) are not able to work together to prevent Anwar from being PM (who they believe, as PM will be beholden to DAP). And when push comes to shove...the Malays voters were driven in droves towards the PAS and PN coalition that has now emerged as a political force to be reckoned with. These are the realities of race and religious politics. Not pleasant to read about, but it needs to be said.
The non-Malays have used their votes judiciously. Given it to PH and there is now a Malay PM designate beholden to DAP (read the Chinese).
Our voters, the Malays, and non-Malays, have not evolved beyond race. Malay and non-Malays politicians will take note of this reality. A reality that will surely have repercussions on the future of this nation. A reality that PN and PAS will use to their best advantage.
I say all this not because I am a Malay first - but because it has to be said.
It augers ill for the future of a Malaysian Malaysia. The future is a Malay Malaysia. And Anwar Ibrahim's time in government will be held to ransom by this reality, for he himself is too aware of the surrounding realities. He will have to choose between DAP and maybe, at best, one term as PM - or move towards union with the other Malay factions if he wants to remain as PM for more than one term.
Say what you want of the Malay voters - that they are uneducated, that race and religion overcome all other sensibilities, but they know what they want. They want a united, strong, and committed Malay party that they could vote for. They want the Umno of old. That Umno is no more....and so the Malays voters are fractured and when the Malay votes are fractured, the Malays are fractured. This is what happened in PRU15.
Let me make a prediction for PRU16. There will be a united Malay block going into PRU16. Whether real or imagined, the fears of the Malays losing their Tanah Air to the Chinese is, for them, real. And this will be the underlying force that will drive the Malay politicians together to take back political hegemony from their nemesis - DAP (read the Chinese).
I can write and say about these things because you guys know what I have written about in the past - I write about what is good for Malaysia and Malaysians. You cannot label me anything else. So I say what needs to be said - i.e. that the politics of race and religion is already embedded within the DNA of the Malays. And if you are a Malay politician that wants to have political power - you need to address these wants of the Malays.
This was something that Mahathir has always known, but he was unable, for whatever reasons, to bring together the Malays in PRU15. And he has ultimately paid the price. We now bid farewell to the venerable old man and move on. And the Malays have also spoken that the old political guards must now retire and live comfortably on their political spoils.
It is now 4.28 a.m. Melbourne time. PRU15 is by no means over. The coming days will see horse trading that would put to shame even the worst among horse traders. PH can form government. PN can form the government...the possibilities are interesting. We wait.
Enough said.
BREAKING THE DEADLOCK OF A HUNG PARLIAMENT COMMENTARY From Ibrahim M Ahmad 20 November 2022 https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/opinion/2022/11/20/ph-bn-alliance-offers-malaysia-its-best-chance-to-build-back/ A long wait spanning two dozen years may be about to end as Anwar Ibrahim stands on the cusp of becoming Malaysia’s 10th prime minister. Yet, for that to happen, the secret pact between him and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, which I wrote about previously, must come to light and be accepted by all. That time had not yet come when Anwar, leader of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition that won the highest number of seats at the 15th general election (GE15), spoke to the press early this morning. Speaking with extreme caution, Anwar announced his intention to form a government. “We have entered into an understanding. What I’m saying is we…
In the end, same question remains. If I convert now to Islam and become a non bona fide Malay like so many of the Indos, Pakistanis, etc, etc.... Would I still want to live in Malaysia due to the many advantages given to me. The answer is NO. It does not matter if the Malays overwhelming chose PAS and nationalism over progress and the improvement of the nation. In the end, the urban rich will get richer. Their children will continue to grow by leaps and bounds. And the poor Malays from Kelantan, Trengganu, Kedah and Perlis will survive with yearly floods, undrinkable water and no progress. The point is it does NOT MATTER. The nons have learnt to surviv…
