Learning poverty in Malaysia is 40%. 4 out of 10 kids under 10 cannot read a sentence...

Listen to the last part about "learning poverty". The statistics mentioned shows a scary state of affairs in the education system. The person speaking is Lead Economist of World Bank in Malaysia.

I think we need to look at what language those sentences were. If you ask chinese school students to read in malay, most likely they will not be able to do it.

Unless its malay students the economist was talking sbout, then its a big worry.

I know rural malay kids who speak english with a american accent thanks to you tube and they are not able to mix with malay speaking kids at school. Nor i reckon, do they understand a word the teacher is saying. As subjects are taught in malay. THe british left us with the best possible system to suit those of dufferent background so that none will be left out, but our nazis dismantled it.
