Read somewhere the origin of the term. It comes from the word 'nephew', nepos in latin or nepotismo in italian.
It came about because roman catholic priests were not allowed to have their own children and hence no descendant.
To overcome this situation, the pope appoint his 14 yr-15 yr old nephews to
powerful administrative post so as to manage the rest of the lower cardinals.
The real pupose is of course to control the massive amount of property and commodities, collect rents, give tender and contracts to family members and friends in the roman catholic denomination.
