Dr. Mahathir's Return As Defacto Leader: Implications For Anwar Ibrahim's Government

Opinion 17 Sep 2023

The recent appointment of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad as the unofficial adviser to the four states under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition's control carries significant implications, particularly for national politics and Anwar Ibrahim's government.

This move, aimed at establishing the "State Government 4" (SG4) alliance comprising Terengganu, Kedah, Kelantan, and Perlis, signals a potential shift in Malaysia's political dynamics.

Firstly, Dr. Mahathir's return to a prominent advisory role, some defined as defacto head, highlights his enduring influence in Malaysian politics.

Despite being ousted as prime minister in 2020, he remains a formidable figure with a wealth of experience. His role as an adviser could provide valuable insights into effective governance and economic development, which are critical for the success of the SG4 initiative.

Secondly, the decision to connect the four states with investors from countries like Japan and South Korea through Dr. Mahathir emphasises the importance of foreign investments in Malaysia's economic growth. This move could boost the economic prospects of the SG4 states, potentially attracting much-needed capital and stimulating development that will largely circumvent steps taken by the federal government to stifle their efforts. However, these developments raise questions about the stability of Anwar Ibrahim's government. Dr. Mahathir's alignment with the PN coalition during the recent state elections and his role as an adviser to SG4 may indicate a growing alliance between him and PN. This could pose challenges to the opposition's efforts to consolidate power and push for reforms. Furthermore, the history of political maneuvering in Malaysian politics, including the "Sheraton Move" that led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in 2020, serves as a reminder of the volatility of national politics. Dr. Mahathir's ability to bridge gaps and forge alliances could potentially impact the balance of power.

In conclusion, Dr. Mahathir's return to a pivotal role in Malaysian politics, especially as an adviser to the SG4 states, carries significant implications for both governance and political stability of the country. Making Dr Mahathir Mohamad an unofficial adviser to a grouping of opposition-led states is akin to projecting him as the coalition’s de facto leader. That would position him directly opposite the current PM, his nemesis, Anwar Ibrahim. While it presents opportunities for economic development and foreign investment, it also raises questions about the stability of Anwar Ibrahim's government and the potential for shifting alliances in the ever-evolving Malaysian political arena. Malaysia's political future remains uncertain, and these developments only add to the intrigues plaguing the country's political scene. But we are sure this latest development is not likely to be comfortable for Dr. Mahathir's former protegè-turned-nemis, Anwar Ibrahim, our PMX.

Tun has NOT had exactly covered in glory when governing Malaysia

Had the resources and manpower to turn Malaysia propel into

Premier League of the world

But, he managed Malaysia into the third division through

gross mismanagement and mega corruption

And throw in his vanity projects for good measure

He was a failure in all ways

And this dork is going to lead the 4 northern states to

glory??

Pull the other one

Monkey can run flower stall better than him

Karma will definitely pay him a visit

Long overdue
