KUALA LUMPUR: Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) will be airing a special segment called 'Biar Betul' to fend off fake and slanderous news from Oct 1.
Communications and Digital Ministry, in a statement, said the special segment will be aired by Berita KANTA 744 on TV1 and RTM news channels while the repeat broadcast will be accessible in all social media and RTM Radio.
This initiative is a collaboration between portal Sebenarnya.my which is overseen by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and MyCheck.my under the supervision of Bernama with the aim to fend off fake news and defamation through various media platforms.
"The ministry is determined to combat the spread of fake news and calls on Malaysians to always ensure that the news and information they receive is from authentic sources," it said today.
The idea was first mooted by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil earlier this month who told Dewan Rakyat the government planned to create "Fitnah Apa Hari Ini" programme to counter fake news against the government.

I cringe when I see the kind of ideas MCMC has got to fend off "fake and slanderous news". They are coming up with the "Biar Betul" segment during news hour and also the creating of "Fitnah Apa Hari Ini" segment? Surely the Communication and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzi and Bernama has better things to do!
For starters ...who will be listening to the "Biar Betul" segment in Berita KANTA 744 on TV1 and RTM news channels? Or should I say who listens to TV1 and the RTM news channel????
Apart from the Minister, maybe his deputy might if he has nothing better to do.
An army of well paid and media and Internet savvy cybertroopers will be listening to the segment to see how they can betul the "Biar Betul" news to suit their agenda. It will then be a contest between MCMC and the cybertroopers as to who is more betul. While the authorities will have to wait until the next news bulletin to counter the "betul" being posted by the cybertroopers, the cybertroopers will be promoting and giving 'credibility' to their "betul" version 24/7.
Don't MCMC know that once fake news is out there on the NET, the damage is already done: 64% of adults believe fake news stories. By the time the "Fitnah Apa Hari ini" segment comes out, the fact that MCMC is saying it is a fitnah is proof enough for the other 36% of nonbelievers of the fake news to believe that the fake news is truth.
MCMC cannot win lah!
Of course MCMC should counter fake and slanderous news but do so in a more subtle and effective manner. Enough said.
I respectfully Disagree
Silence is golden.
The issue is who is telling the truth and what punishment when FACT Checkers are lying just like during COVID conspiracy facts....too late for Pfizer jabs 》 *3 otw in line to mortuary....👿👿👿
I respectfully disagree. I believe this initiative is excellent. I personally utilize fact-checking websites available on the internet, such as:
PolitiFact
Fact Check
These are for verifying foreign news. However, we do need dedicated fact-checking websites for our own news.
Additionally, TV segments can also be made available on the web for readers to check without watching TV.
The proliferation of fake news is a concerning issue. Fake news spreads when individuals share false information, believing it to be true.
Having our own fact-checking site would be a brilliant solution. Without such a resource, it becomes challenging to verify the authenticity of articles. One must read various news sources, including those contradicting the fake news, to draw their own conclusions.
