Smiles
I’ve held off from writing about the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins for months. Hawkins died last March at 50 in a Bogota, Colombia hotel after suffering from chest pains. Colombian authorities reported that Hawkins’ toxicology analysis indicated that he had ten substances in his system including opioids and benzodiazepines. Whatever the precise cause of Hawkins’ death, it is just so sad to me. He left behind a young family and a band that spreads joy throughout the world. I thought of him as the greatest rock drummer working while he was alive and I would include him in a discussion about the all-time greats alongside of his bandmate, Dave Grohl, who played drums for Nirvana.
This past Saturday night, the Foo Fighters pulled together a star-studded concert in Hawkins’ honor in London. It was an emotional show with some cathartic performances. In a night full of highlights that included guest appearances by Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hynde, Queen's Roger Taylor and Brian May, Rush, AC/DC singer Brian Johnson, Nile Rodgers and others, it was Hawkins’ 16 year-old son Shane that stole the show and brought a big smile.
Watch the above clip of the Foo Fighters with Shane Hawkins on drums, and you’ll smile too.
